Well, I was a professor at Ball State University for 12 years, and before that at the University of Oklahoma for one year. Now I am a computer professional. I left little in Oklahoma that I care about. And in Muncie I had some great successes, notably the Indiana Writing Project, a site of the National Writing Project. There was one day when the grant funding ran out, and I was sitting at home saying to myself that it was good run, but it was over. I had been lobbying for state funding for some time. The day I cancelled the last Summer Institute, I got a call after dinner from someone named Nancy, who was someone, somewhere in the Indiana Department of Education. She said "I need two pages on your project, and I need it tonight. No more than two pages, because these dimwits down here won't read more than that." So I said goodbye to my wife and daughter, drove to the office, and I wrote two pages, and emailed them to Nancy. I have no idea what they said anymore. Two weeks later, we had state funding. I drastically reinvented that Summer Institute. It was one of my greatest accomplishments.
